It doesn't have quite the same historic implications as, say, Billie Jean King's straight set victory over Bobby Riggs nearly 35 years ago, but there's something to be said for Danica Patrick becoming the first female ever to win a major car race. Even more important than Patrick winning, in my eyes, was that she did it fair and square. No one cried foul after the race was finished that she had an unfair advantage. On the advice of her crew, she conserved fuel throughout the race, and when she saw her chance to pass one of IndyCar's top racers on the last lap, she took it. If she doesn't necessarily silence her critics (the ones, including yours truly, who said she was a cute girl who looks great in a magazine spread, but probably didn't have the chutzpah to win anything), at least she'll keep us quiet for now. Even if she did get all blubbery in her post-race interview....
